TEAM ALBERTA DAILY MEDIA BULLETIN

CHARLOTTETOWN—Team Alberta added six gold, 10 silver and eight bronze to its overall medal count on Friday at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, bringing its overall total to 73 medals: 19 gold, 30 silver and 24 bronze. The Canada Summer Games are being held across Prince Edward Island, August 15-29.

Track and Field Athletes Run for Gold

Alberta's track and field athletes hauled in a total of eight medals on the final day of competition at the University of Prince Edward Island.


Alberta athletes made three trips to the top of the podium in track and field. Calgary's Jessica O'Connell won the women's 1,500-metre race, while both the men's and women's 4x100-metre relay teams crossed the finish line first.


"To come here and capture a couple of medals is definitely a great feeling," said Calgary's Amonn Nelson, of the women's 4x100 squad who also won the silver in the women's 200-metre race yesterday. "The whole team did very well today and it was a great way to end the Games."


The following are a complete list of medal-winners in athletics events Friday.
Ø Jessica O'Connell, Calgary, wins gold in the 1,500-metre race;

Ø Ricardo Charles, Edmonton, Sam Effah, Calagry, Akeem Haynes, Calgary, and Julian Reddy, Edmonton, win gold in the men's 4x100-metre relay;

Ø Karlene Hurrel, Calgary, Loudia Laarman, Lethbridge, Kelsey Lotwin, Calgary, and Jenn Zimmer, Cochrane, win gold in the women's 4x100-metre race;

Ø Evan Kimick,Edmonton, Wynand Nel, Grand Prairie, Jaden Ostapowich, Beaumont, and Mike Saizew, Calgary, win silver in the men's 4x400-metre relay;

Ø Hayley Degaust, Edmonton, Rachel Francois, St. Albert, Danielle Kendall, Calgary, Kelsey Lotwin, win silver in the women's 4x400-metre relay;

Ø Edmonton's Deryk Theodore won a silver in men's pole-vault;

Ø Calgary's Kayti Simonson won a bronze in the women's 400-metre hurdles;

Ø Edmonton's Courtenay Wilkes won a bronze in women's triple jump.


Alberta Paddlers Sink Competition at Canada Summer Games

Kristen Hui and Mary Lynn Tobiasz paddled through the wind to the silver-medal position on the podium in the women's K-2 200-metre race on the Southwest River on Friday.


The two Calgarians clocked a time of 49.161 seconds. Saskatchewan finished first with a time of 47.869, while Ontario locked up third after clocking-in at 49.319.


High winds played havoc for the nation's top young paddlers once again with waves and rough water capsizing many of the boats in the field.

Men's Soccer Team Grinds Out Semifinal Victory over Nova Scotia

The men's soccer team will playing for gold against Quebec on Saturday, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Nova Scotia at the Eastern Eagles Soccer Complex in Montague, P.E.I. tonight.


With the score tied at zeroes after regulation time, Alberta was forced to play two 15-minute halves of extra time. Late in the first half, it was Calgary's Sean Colvin who struck again to put Alberta into the championship final.

"Two games in a row of extra time – it is a complete grind out here," said the 18-year-old Colvin, who has five goals in the tournament. "My teammates count on me to score and when I got the ball and put it in it was the most amazing feeling. We are going to relax tonight, get fired up in the morning and beat Quebec in the final."


Alberta beat Prince Edward Island in extra time in the quarter-finals Thursday.


The gold medal game will take place in Montague at 10:30 a.m.

Alberta Wrestlers Rack Up Six Medals on the Mat

The women's wrestling athletes controlled the individual weight class competitions by winning a total of six medals on Friday afternoon.


Edmonton's Natalie Brady and Breanne Pare, of St. Albert, led the powerful Alberta squad with golden performances in the 56kg and 90kg weight classes respectively.


"We definitely had high expectations as a team in all weight classes so this not a surprise for us," said Brady, who also played a critical role in Alberta's silver-medal win in the team competition early this week. "It has been a great experience at the Canada Games and we are happy to have won."


Alberta women also won three silver and one bronze medal. Silver-medal winners were Tonia Zenner, of Grand Prairie, (36-38kg); Tommi Sedia, of Calgary, (60kg); and Holly Clark, of Clarinville, (80kg). Calgary's Cara Nania was the lone bronze-medal winner after capturing third spot in the 43kg division.

Swim Team Pulls Nine More Medals out of the Pool

Alberta's swim team captured nine more medals on Friday to finish the 2009 Canada Summer Games with a total of 31 medals pulled out of the CARI Aquatic Centre. Alberta's swimmers won a total four gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze medals.


The following are medal-winning performances from Team Alberta swim athletes:
Ø Kyle Troskot, Lethbridge, finishes third in men's 50-metre freestyle;

Ø Zachary McAllister, Lethbridge, won a gold in the men's 200 IM and 50-metre freestyle in the swimmers with a disability division;

Ø Kennedy Pasay, Leduc, wins a bonze in the women's 200 IM in the athletes with a disability division;

Ø Morgan Bird,Calgary, wins silver in the swimmers with a disability 50-metre freestyle;

Ø Natasha Fung, St. Albert, won a bronze in women's 200 IM;

Ø David Dimitrov, Calgary, won a silver in the men's 200 IM;

Ø Men's 4x100-metre relay team of Natasha Fung, Lori Layne Kremer, Rachel Nicol and Brooklyn Snodgrass win a silver medal;

Ø Men's 4x100-metre relay team of Chris Dalen, Calgary, David Hibberd, Calgary, Braeden Newton, St. Alberta, and Karl Wolk, Edmonton, won bronze.
