TEAM ALBERTA DAILY MEDIA BULLETIN

CHARLOTTETOWN—Team Alberta added one medal of each colour on Saturday morning to complete the 2009 Canada Summer Games with a total of 76 medals: 20 gold, 31 silver and 25 bronze. The Canada Summer Games were held across Prince Edward Island, August 15-29.

 

Top-Five Final Medal Count Standings
1. Ontario – 202 medals
2. Quebec – 145 medals
3. B.C. – 144 medals
4. Alberta – 76 medals
5. Nova Scotia – 52 medals

 

Men's Volleyball Team Win Gold
The mens' volleyball squad captured the final gold medal of the Games for Team Alberta after knocking off Ontario in the championship game at the Chi-Wan Sports Centre.

Alberta solidified the gold medal with a 3-0 straight-game victory after winning games of 26-24; 25-18; 29-27.

Men's Soccer Team Puts Silver Lining on Stellar Tournament
The men's soccer team ran out of gas after a grueling journey towards earning the opportunity to compete for gold at the Canada Summer Games. Team Alberta won the silver medal on Saturday in Montague, P.E.I. after losing 2-0 to a powerful Quebec team.

The Alberta squad had one of the most difficult runs to get to the big dance, after needing extra time and penalty kicks to knock off the host Prince Edward Island in the quarter-final match. Alberta went into extra time again against Nova Scotia in Friday's semifinal.

Sean Colvin, of Calgary, finished second in goals scored during the tournament with five.

Ontario won the bronze-medal match 2-1 over Nova Scotia.

Women's Volleyball Team Rebounds to Win Bronze Medal
The women's volleyball team rebounded after a heart-breaking semifinal loss to Manitoba by winning the bronze-medal match on Saturday in straight-games over Nova Scotia with scores of 25-18; 25-22; 25-18.

Manitoba went on to win the overall women's volleyball competition after knocking off Ontario.

Team Alberta Highlights at 2009 Canada Summer Games
 Athletes combine to win 76 medals;
 Swim team combines to win 31 medals in the pool;
 Athletics team racks up 15 medals;
 Alberta wrestlers team up to win 14 medals on the mats;
 Calgary's Sam Effah, who recently competed at the 2009 World Track and Field Championships, is selected to be Alberta Flag Bearer for closing ceremonies after setting a Canada Games record in the 200-metre race. Effah also won gold in the 4x100 relay, and captured the silver in the 4x400 metre sprint. Effah raced against world record holder, Usaine Bolt, in Jamaica.
