VOLLEYBALL KICKS OFF WITH WINS FOR TEAM ALBERTA AT CANADA GAMES
Action-packed day for Team Alberta enduring scorching hot temperatures in Winnipeg
(Winnipeg, MB) The 2017 Canada Games continued today in Winnipeg under scorching hot temperatures, and Team Alberta continued its strong showing in many sports throughout the day.
The baseball round robin action continued on the second day of competition. Team Alberta won 6-4 in their single game of the day over Quebec. Alberta once again came out roaring scoring their six runs in the three first innings with three runs in the first inning. Trailing 6-0 after three innings, Quebec rallied with two runs in the fourth and sixth inning but ran out of time to close the gap. It’s double-header day for Alberta tomorrow, with games against British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
The men’s basketball squad lost 76-73 a nail-biting duel against Team Saskatchewan. The two teams exchanged leads throughout the entire game, but ultimately Saskatchewan netted the last couple baskets for the victory. Team Alberta qualified in the Round of 16 Monday evening at 5:30 p.m.
The women’s basketball team easily won their second match in Pool B by the score of 76-41 against Nova Scotia. With a record of 2-0 in pool action, the Alberta ladies will now face the fourth place of Pool A, a quarterfinal game set for Tuesday at 1030am.
The men’s beach volleyball won their opening match in two straight set (21-13, 21-13) against the team from Prince Edward Island. The ladies started their tournament with a strong opponent in Quebec. Team Alberta battled hard to come away with the victory in three sets (21-13, 17-21, 15-8).
The first medals were awarded on this second day of competition in Mountain biking. The men and women races were presented in mid-afternoon heat surpassing 30 degree Celsius. Team Alberta’s Sidney McGill, racing with a fractured wrist and wearing a cast molded to her handlebars, was the province’s top placing in ninth place, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:41:09. Quebec Anne-Julie Tremblay won the first gold medal of these Games. Ontario took the silver and bronze medals, with Jenn Jackson and Soren Meewisee.
A few hours later, it was the men’s turn to tackle the man-made course at Bison Butte Mountain Bike venue. Quebec dominated the race with racers finishing in first, third and fourth places. Felix Burke won the top honor, followed by Ontario’s Brody Sanderson. Felix Belhumeur took third place. Alberta’s Isaac Niles placed sixth with a time of 1:20:09. Kaleb Muller was 11th, while Sean Germaine was 13th.
Team Alberta kicked off its women soccer tournament with a 1-1 draw against the surprising team from Newfoundland and Labrador. Team Alberta trailed early in a game as Newfoundland surprised the Alberta keeper. In added time, Team Alberta bounced back thanks to a beautiful through-ball deep into the attacking zone to striker Tanya Boychuck, who netted the equalizer.
In sailing at Gimli, Team Alberta hit the water after a technical delay waiting for proper winds to pick up. In the Single-handed – Laser, Connor Weicht finished in seventh place. Rachel Kortbeek took fifth of the Single-handed – Laser Radial category. Alberta placed seventh of the women’s Double Handed – 29er race while the men’s Double Handed – 29er members of Team Alberta placed eighth. Wendy Frazier was sixth of the 2.4m Para Mix race.
After splitting a double-header on opening day, the Alberta men’s softball squad dropped both their games today, 8-1 against Newfoundland and 3-1 facing Nova Scotia.
The 2017 Canada Summer Games continue tomorrow with all sports in action.
